Cherokee County Foreclosure Aid Program
September 9th, 2008
Good news has arrived for the distressed homeowners of the Cherokee County real estate. A free assistance will be provided to the homeowners facing foreclosure on their property. This free assistance will be given in Spartanburg. Nearly 15 foreclosures are dealt by the clerk of court’s office every month. A total of four houses are going to be sold on September 2, which is the next Cherokee County sale date for foreclosed homes. This is a significant decline from what it was in August 2007. About 30 to 35 homes were put up for sale last year. The free assistance will be given out by the SC Foreclosure Task Force that was created in June.
The SC Foreclosure Task Force gave out the same kind of assistance to those real estate homeowners living near Charleston. This free foreclosure assistance is open for all the residents of South Carolina. It has been reported that about 80 of the distressed homeowners have attended this free assistance program offered at three clinics in Spartanburg. The counselor in charge of providing assistance is a US Department of Housing and Urban Development approved person. According to foreclosure prevention specialist of Homeownership Resource Center Carolyn Lecque, the next clinic will be organized at Business Training Center located at the campus of Spartanburg Community College.
The clinic at the Spartanburg Community College campus will be held for 7 hours from 9 am till 4 pm. Only a single session is required to be attended by the homeowners before they move up for meeting a counselor. Those who are thinking about attending this foreclosure aid session will have to carry their latest mortgage statement along with other important documents. Rep. Harold Mitchell, D-Spartanburg has said, “We’re looking to move into Union, all in an effort to make this convenient,” He was the person who introduced it to the Upstate after its success at Charleston.
Nearly 70 percent success rate has been reported for the Homeownership Resource Center in their foreclosure assistance. About 350 households were saved in South Carolina last year as a result of this program and about 500 homes received assistance. Lecque has said that some of the homeowners might be qualified for a low payment. She has further stated, “Some people just can’t afford to stay in their homes and some don’t want to stay in their homes, but we do everything we can to help them.”
